Low Tech
A low tech device to use for students with emotional disturbance is a behavior chart or a rewards chart. Students' emotional outbursts can adversely effect their academic performance so it is important for teachers to monitor and control their students' actions and emotions. Behavior and rewards charts can help motivate students to act more appropriately and allow them to understand how their actions and emotions effect themselves and others. Students can self-evaluate themselves and how they progress while using these charts. Not all students will benefit from the use of these charts; some students may not take them seriously. If rewards are not chosen by students or the rewards don't match students' interests then the charts will probably be unsuccessful.
Mid Tech
Music on an iPod or MP3 player can be used as a mid tech device for students with emotional disturbance. When they are getting aggravated, they could sit in a quiet area of the room and listen to music to calm themselves down before they act out. This can be a way for students to gain self-control and recognize when they are going to have an outburst. Listening to music in a quiet corner would allow them to relax and not worry about whatever is bothering them even if they just need to listen to one song. Some students may be unable to stop themselves from lashing out even if they know an outburst is about to happen. If they are able to stop themselves, music may not relax them. They may also decide to sit and listen to music to avoid school work.
High Tech
A high tech device that can be used for students with emotional disturbances is an iPad. Students can use them to play games when they need a break or as a reward for good behavior. Games such as Minecraft allow students to continue their games where they left off and require a good amount of focus and creativity. This would allow students to be distracted from anything that is bothering them and hopefully motivate students to exhibit positive behavior. These games may be too distracting for students and it may be hard to stop them from playing. If a teacher has to argue with a student to get them to stop playing, it could cause another outburst of emotion. If there is any sensitive material involved in a game it may trigger an outburst.
