Low Tech
Sticky notes are a low tech tool for students with a traumatic brain injury. They can be used in several different ways to help keep a student organized. They can be placed in a book to help identify the main ideas. Sticky notes may be placed in a journal or agenda to help a student remember assignments due or tests that they have coming up. If the student is putting a sticky note in a book to remember something, it should probably be accompanied by some kind of written note so that he/she remembers why it is there. If a sticky note falls out of a book then the student can easily forget about something important and there may be more detail needed to remember why a sticky note was put in a certain spot.
Mid Tech
Cell phones can be used in multiple ways to help someone with a traumatic brain injury. A student may use google on a cell phone to look up a piece of information that they can't remember. They may use a timer to help them concentrate for a certain amount of time before taking a break or timing a break. They could use the notes section in the cell phone to keep track of assignments and due dates. This can help with their organization and time management skills. Almost all cell phones have a setting where text can be enlarged if someone is experiencing vision problems as a result of their injury. Cell phones do run on battery life so once it dies it won't be useful until it is charged again. In order to use Google, the student must have access to the internet or have some kind of data plan which costs money. Cell phones are also a popular device to have so there is a risk of it being stolen if it is not accounted for.
High Tech
Text to speech software is a good high tech device for those with traumatic brain injuries to use. This type of software can read text on the computer to a student. As a result of a TBI, a student may encounter vision problems and frequent headaches when trying to focus on reading something. This can reduce the risk of those issues by having the opportunity to listen to text instead. Sometimes the voice reading the text lacks expression and can be boring to listen to. This might make it hard for students to concentrate on what is being read. It is also hard to listen to this if the student is in a noisy environment because turning the volume up louder to hear the voice can cause headaches.
