Low Tech
Brainstorming and graphic organizers are good low tech devices to use for students with a specific learning disability. They can both be used to help with the writing process. Brainstorming can be used to help students get ideas formulating in their head and then they can use a graphic organizer to start to organize all of their ideas and build on them. Depending on the student and type of graphic organizer used, the organizer may be too messy and unorganized. It may also be seen as busy work and the student may do it just to get it done instead of using it to help them form a piece of writing.
Mid Tech
Calculators are good mid tech devices for students who struggle with math calculations. They may know how to solve a problem and the steps involved, but they tend to do the calculations wrong. A calculator can help a student to figure out the answer. The calculator may need big buttons or it may say the answer to a student. As long as a student can write out the steps to solving a problem, using a calculator shouldn't be a problem. If students are learning how to add or subtract, they should start by using some kind of manipulative so that a teacher can assess whether or not the student knows how to do the math, then a calculator could be used. Students may type something wrong into the calculator and not know where the mistake was made in the end. With some complex math equations, the calculator can give a wrong answer.
High Tech
The Echo SmartPen by Livescribe is a high tech device that allows students to take notes while recording what the teacher is saying. Some students have a hard time writing fast enough to record everything a teacher says or they try to copy a PowerPoint and miss extra information said by the teacher. Whatever the circumstance is, the student can touch the pen to a section of the notes that were taken and the pen will play the recording of the lecture at that point. While this device can help a lot of students catch up on missed information, this is also an expensive device. If a teacher is being recorded in a noisy environment, the student may struggle to hear what was being said when listening to the recording. You also have to use Livescribe paper in order for the pen to work correctly so students must be careful not to run out of paper.
